Simbiosis | Nectarios extraflorales en maracuyá y su relación con los insectos

Uno de los aspectos más increíbles que podemos encontrar dentro de un entorno natural o antrópico, son las estrechas "alianzas" e interacciones cercanas que se forjan entre componentes biológicos de diferentes tipos, todo esto con el ineludible propósito de sobrevivir ante la adversidad presente en el entorno. En este sentido, es bastante habitual que muchos de estos forjadores de alianzas sean miembros de la siempre reconocida y muy nombrada clase Insecta, pues, para nadie es un secreto que los llamados "bichos" están presentes en una infinidad de procesos naturales, llegando a ser muy cercanos con microorganismos, grandes animales, plantas y otros artrópodos. Todo esto, con las posibilidades de obtener beneficios mutuos (mutualismo), de que solo una de las partes salga beneficiada sin causar molestias (comensalismo) o de que una se beneficie mientras destruye a la otra (parasitismo), esto por mencionar algunos ejemplos de lo que se discutirá en la siguiente entrada.

Continuando con esta idea, es posible que las distintas imágenes presentadas en la portada sean algo confusas, ya que en ellas se ven simples hormigas posadas en determinados puntos de alguna planta; sin embargo, más que enfocarnos en las "poses" o la estética de estos insectos, debemos preguntarnos ¿Qué están haciendo en esa planta? o ¿Por qué están todas cerca de esas estructuras abultadas? Estos ejemplares no están allí por casualidad, la verdad es que están siendo atraídas masivamente para cumplir un propósito que tiene hasta un modesto "sueldo" incluido. Este será el punto a revelar en el siguiente artículo, en donde seremos testigos de una de las maravillas que está presente en la naturaleza y que forma parte de aquello que técnicamente se conoce como Simbiosis.

El misterio de las protuberancias en las hojas de la maracuyá

Hace algunos días, me hicieron algunas preguntas sobre el mal estado de una pequeña planta de maracuyá (parchita), la persona me comentaba que su planta era aparentemente atacada por "plagas", pero por más que buscaba no encontraba nada que culpar, por lo que tenía la duda de cual era el problema real. A su vez, cuando llegué al lugar para inspeccionar la persona me hizo otra serie de preguntas, ¿Qué serán estas protuberancias que tienen las hojas? ¿Será una enfermedad? Ahora bien, para responder estas preguntas es necesario observar todo con detenimiento, para ello centremos nuestra atención, primeramente, en la fotografía que comparto a la izquierda.

En esta foto, podemos ver las pequeñas estructuras o "abultamientos" a las que se refiere esta persona remarcadas con un círculo rojo, son 2 pequeñas protuberancias ubicadas justo donde termina el peciolo (el pequeño tallo de las hojas) e inicia la lámina foliar (hoja). Esto puede parecer un problema por su apariencia cercana a las llamadas agallas (como las de la yuca), pero en realidad son estructuras naturales generadas por la planta que tienen una muy valiosa función que muy pocos conocen y que suelen confundir con un problema. De igual manera, en la imagen de la derecha se comparte la prueba de como se agrupan pequeños contingentes de hormigas en la cercanía de estas protuberancias de origen vegetal, estas estructuras no son provocadas por factores externos en este caso, sino que forman parte de la misma planta para una función muy puntual y que forma parte de su propia supervivencia, denominándose nectarios extraflorales dichas piezas. Esto lo estaré ampliando más adelante de forma más detallada.

I’ve been living in Portugal for many years, and one of the interesting things I’ve noticed—aside from the tangerines you can find on city streets—is the cork oak. You can find a sobreiro just about anywhere—whether in a park, an urban area, nature reserves, etc.—and you can always recognize it because half of its trunk is bare, stripped of its bark, and some municipalities even mark them. So if you come to my country, the first thing you’ll notice is a sobreiro; that’s why I decided to feature it, because it’s a tree native to this region and we share it with some areas of Spain.
The cork oak, also known as the “chaparro” or “cork tree,” goes by several names; its scientific name is Quercus suber. As a tree predominant in Portugal, it is most concentrated along the Alentejo coast and in the Algarve mountains. It has quite distinctive bark, as can be seen in the photos, but that very characteristic generates 5.5 billion euros for the country, because that bark is the source of cork. Portugal is the largest exporter of this material, which—even though we associate it directly with alcoholic beverages such as wine, champagne, etc.— This material also has many other uses; it is an incredible natural thermal insulator—even NASA uses cork as insulation in some spacecraft—and it is also used in decoration, musical instruments, and civil engineering projects.

Desde hace muchos años, vivo en Portugal y una de las curiosidades que llegué a notar, aparte de las mandarinas que podemos encontrar en las calles urbanas, es el árbol sobreiro. En cualquier lugar, ya sea un parque, una zona urbana, reservas, etc., puedes encontrar un sobreiro y siempre podemos reconocerlo porque la mitad del tronco queda desnudo sin su corteza y algunos municipios pueden dejarlos marcados. Así que si vienes a mi país, lo primero que notarás es un sobreiro; por eso decidí elegirlo, porque es un árbol autóctono de aquí y podemos compartirlo con algunas zonas de España.
El sobreiro, chaparro, árbol del corcho, puede ser conocido con varios nombres; tiene de nombre científico Quercus suber. Siendo un árbol predominante en Portugal, su concentración es más concentrada en Alentejo litoral y serras algarvias. Tiene una corteza bastante peculiar, como se puede apreciar en las fotos, pero esa peculiaridad le genera al país 5,5 mil millones de euros, porque esa corteza es origen del producto corcho. Portugal es el mayor exportador de ese material que, a pesar de que lo asociamos directamente a las bebidas alcohólicas como vino, champán, etc. Ese material también tiene muchas utilidades; es un aislante térmico natural increíble, que incluso la NASA utiliza el corcho como aislante en algunas naves; también es utilizado de decoración, instrumentos y construcciones civiles.

Another very interesting fact about this tree is that Portugal began exporting this material as early as the 14th century. And according to historians, the first civilizations to make use of this tree’s bark were the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans; they used the material for fishing, nets, corks, and barrels for beverages.
But the best part about all these interesting facts is that this material can be harvested continuously without harming the tree; it is extracted from the bark of the cork oak without the need to cut down the tree, making this process beneficial for the ecosystem.

Cada quien en sus rutinas diarias, con algunas que nos sacan de ellas. Igual que sean de mucho aprendizaje las que nos dicen que salgamos de las rutinas.

El insecto de la imagen llegó a mis espacios, a mi escritorio, no está fuera, en la naturaleza, en árboles o espacios naturales. Hacer las imágenes costó un poco se movía mucho entre los espacios de los libros y lo que allí tenía sobre él, me pareció raro su color, las líneas que presenta.

Su nombre científico es Metamasius hemipterus, es un escarabajo que comúnmente se le conoce como el picudo rayado o gorgojo rayado.

Mide entre 1 y 2 centímetros de longitud, este se puede apreciar de 1 centímetro de longitud. Posee el típico rostro alargado y curvado hacia debajo de los gorgojos y las antenas en forma de codo.

De acuerdo a lo investigado son insectos muy activos que vuelan y caminan con facilidad, según la descripción encontrada dice que tienen hábitos más bien nocturnos o crepusculares.

Geográficamente es nativo de las regiones tropicales y subtropicales de América. Muy presente en Centroamérica, Sudamérica y el Caribe. Por lo general habita en plantaciones agrícolas y zonas húmedas donde se encuentran sus plantas hospedantes, como la caña de azúcar, plátanos, bananos y diversas especies de palmas como la palma aceitera y el cocotero.

Tienden a refugiarse u ocultarse entre las hojas al pie de las plantas, debajo de restos vegetales en descomposición o en las cavidades y heridas de los tallos.

En la agricultura es considerado como una plaga de importancia económica en cultivos como la caña de azúcar, plátano, piña y diversas palmeras. Porque al perforar los tallos en las plantaciones debilitan las estructuras internas provocando que las plantas pierdan vigor y se quiebren con facilidad ante los implacables temporales que se pueden presentar, en los campos abiertos, las plantas pueden morir antes de dar sus frutos.

Las larvas hacen un daño físico porque se convierten vectores de patógenos que facilitan infecciones secundarias y enfermedades graves en los cultivos.

El comportamiento de estos insectos estos sienten una gran atracción química por los tejidos vegetales en proceso de fermentación, por ello suelen invadir plantaciones donde restos de cosechas cortadas, heridas recientes o daños previos causados por otros insectos.

Una manera de defenderse ante este insecto, en los sembradíos suelen utilizar trampas con atrayentes y feromonas de agregación combinadas con melaza o trozos de caña en fermentación para capturar y controlar a los adultos de forma masiva.

La verdad es que es bien interesante este insecto, la pregunta es cómo llegó a mis espacios de casa, a mi escritorio, se paseó por toda la sala hasta subir al escritorio. Sembradíos, unas plantas contadas de topocho al lado de mi casa que considero no muy llamativa para este insecto, aunque puede ocurrir.

Hola querido hiver.

El nombre de esta comunidad, Amazing Nature, es perfecto para lo que te voy a contar en esta publicación. Nuestra atención volará a millones de kilómetros de nuestro planeta. 150 para ser exactos.

Por si no lo sabías, el 12 de agosto de 2026 se produjo un eclipse total de Sol visible desde la Tierra. Y Zaragoza, la ciudad en la que vivo, estaba dentro de la franja que tenía el privilegio de verlo de forma completa. Hasta aquí viajaron personas de todo el mundo con el fin de vivir en persona ese momento mágico. El más especial que recuerdo en mucho tiempo, pues no todos los días se tiene la oportunidad de ser testigo de este excepcional fenómeno astronómico.

Como sucede ahora con cualquier evento, sea natural o creado por el hombre, fuimos bombardeados desde las semanas previas con información para disfrutar el eclipse de forma segura y evitar posibles problemas posteriores en la vista. El Ayuntamiento publicó una página con información muy completa con todo tipo de consejos y recomendaciones de lugares con mejores vistas, además de una cronología de lo que íbamos a contemplar.

En mi caso la suerte era aliada. Podía haberlo visto desde mi casa, tan solo asomando un poco el cuerpo por la ventana. Pero nos apetecía compartirlo con más personas, así que junto a unos vecinos planeamos movernos unos metros hasta una zona despejada y en la que teníamos donde sentarnos, ya que el eclipse duró en total alrededor de una hora y media.

Antes de eso nos habíamos hecho con unas gafas especiales para poder mirar el sol directamente mientras sucedía el eclipse. Fue gracioso que las nuestras eran las que distribuyó la Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles, precisamente para evitar formar parte de sus filas, jeje. No son muy sexis y por si eso fuera poco necesitaba llevar debajo mis gafas de sol graduadas, pero cumplieron su función.

A partir de aquí las fotografías están libres de edición salvo algún recorte para que se pueda apreciar el cambio paulatino de la luz. Como no dispongo de equipo especial y no quería que se estropease la cámara de mi teléfono evité apuntar directamente al Sol.

19:35 Hora de inicio del eclipse. En este momento la Luna comenzaba a tapar el Sol por el lado derecho pero era inapreciable.

19:52 Con las gafas especiales para ver el eclipse ya podíamos ver cómo el Sol se ocultaba. Se empezó a apreciar un descenso de la luminosidad.

20:02 El tiempo parecía haberse detenido, pues a simple vista nada parecía haber cambiado.

20:08 Pero el reloj avanzaba, la Luna seguía comiéndose el Sol. En esos días atardecía pasadas las 21 horas y parecía que el ocaso se adelantaba una hora.

20:16 A falta de un último cuarto de hora para la ocultación total se produjo un fenómeno curioso: en el cielo se reflejó lo que parecía una Luna en posición opuesta.

20:20 Cuando solo quedaban 10 minutos para el eclipse los pájaros comenzaron a volar y a llamarse unos a otros.

[ENG/ESP] Environmental challenges at the Golden Hill gold mine in Cuba

A Necessary Introduction

Golden Hill is a high-sulfidation epithermal deposit typical of Cuba’s central volcanic arc. Its development was made possible through the systematic work of researchers from the Geological Service of Cuba, who characterized its geology, mineralization mechanisms, and economic viability. In the current context of economic crisis, the mine holds strategic value as a source of foreign currency; however, environmental oversight must remain consistently focused on two primary risks: acid mine drainage and cyanide contamination.

Geological and Geographical Characteristics, and the Contribution of Cuban Researchers

Location and Geological Context

The Golden Hill deposit is located approximately 8 km north-northeast (NNE) of the town of Jobabo, in Las Tunas Province. It covers an area of about 7.2 km² and consists of several mineralized bodies. The mineralization is hosted within the Upper Cretaceous Crucero Contramaestre Formation—a sequence approximately 2,800 meters thick composed of andesites, basalts, volcaniclastic rocks, and limestones. The gold is associated with andesitic breccias and tuffs that exhibit silicification, argillization, and advanced argillic alteration. This characterizes the site as a high-sulfidation epithermal deposit, with mineralizing fluid temperatures ranging between 172°C and 330°C.

Research and Feasibility Work

Researchers from the Geological Service of Cuba, through studies of fluid inclusions and isotopes, clarified the mineralization mechanism and the zonation of the deposit, thereby guiding subsequent exploration.

Regarding economic viability, the studies concluded that the oxidized ores are technically and economically exploitable through heap leaching, and that the project remained attractive even at historically low gold prices.

Furthermore, the use of automated mine planning systems was recommended to ensure strict control over ore grade; this established the technical and economic foundation for the mine’s commissioning around 2011.

The geological work also confirmed that this deposit serves as a starting point for gold development in the Camagüey–Las Tunas region, providing a model for regional exploration.

Contribution to the National Economy

Golden Hill is the first gold mine established in Cuba in the 20th century and has held the country’s largest reserves since 2011. Amid a severe economic crisis and a shortage of foreign currency, it serves as a key source of revenue in freely convertible currency. Average monthly production ranges from 10 to 12 kg of gold, with an annual output of approximately 110 kg in the form of ingots (doré).

The Role of Cuban Researchers and Technicians

Cuban geological and technical personnel not only conducted the initial research but continue to optimize operations. For instance, transporting ore from the Jacinto mine to the Golden Hill plant has made it possible to increase the utilization of installed capacity and improve the quality of the ingots. This model of resource integration reflects the technical proficiency of Cuban professionals in geological and mining decision-making. Environmental issues requiring monitoring and other factors to consider

Based on the project's environmental impact assessment and the geochemical characteristics of the deposit, the following must be subject to ongoing monitoring and regulation:

Acid Mine Drainage

The ore body contains pyrite as its primary sulfide mineral. Following open-pit mining, the oxidation of these sulfides can generate acid mine drainage, posing a risk of surface water contamination and indirect impacts throughout the food chain. Although carbonate minerals present in the surrounding host rock provide some degree of neutralization, this capacity is not unlimited; therefore, long-term water monitoring stations must be established at waste rock dumps and mining areas.

Faltan 6 días para culminar el concurso y tenemos dos entradas más. A pesar de ser algo bastante básico, tenemos muy buen contenido y es bastante creativo. Con ello, estaríamos a tan solo 3 concursos de culminar esta competición. Como mencionaba en otros posts, nadie tiene ventaja ahora; por lo tanto, si no has participado hasta ahora y te decides, ¡puedes quedar campeón aún!
