The Most Difficult HiveWords of the Past Seven Days

Every Friday, I’ll be reviewing the past week's HiveWord puzzles. The reviews will include a summary of the words' difficulty, solution rates, attempts and obscurity.

If you are new to HiveWord or would like some hints and tips for solving this puzzle, you can find more information at the end of this post.

The table below lists the previous seven days' HiveWords along with their difficulty, solve rate, average attempts and score.

HiveWord provides the puzzle's difficulty and other measures except for the score.

The score measures how often the word's letters appear in the puzzle over time.

I calculated the scores using a simple Python script included in the WordGuess bundle, which you can download from the Programs section of Learning Pages Digital Products. Keep all scripts in the decompressed folder because the bundle's scripts use data.py

Difficulty

I originally thought difficulty should be measured as a combination of attempts and difficulty, but @databaron's comment and my finding that PAGES had a lower score but was more difficult than VOWEL have prompted me to reconsider.

Although it's good to solve a puzzle with a few attempts, solving it is more important. In fact, my solution strategy involves more attempts.

Also, mistakes increase the number of attempts. This could be because you were tired or distracted - not because the puzzle was difficult.

I now calculate the difficulty using the inverse of the success rate.

Obscurity

A low score doesn't necessarily mean that the word is obscure. LIVID has a low score, but its meaning is well known.

Even the solve rate isn't the best indicator of obscurity because some puzzles can be solved using logic.

The best guide to a word's obscurity is whether you have to look up its meaning in the dictionary.

Observations

This week's most difficult word was FORCE, with a 90% solve rate. HiveWord rated FORCE as Moderate, and KNACK as Hard, which had a 100% solve rate.

Just Surviving [EN/PT]

Honestly, I've come to the conclusion that I'm just surviving. I'm not sure when this happened or how this perspective found its way into my life. Maybe it's just the thoughts of a man struggling with anxiety, but I've realized that life is simply passing before my eyes, and I no longer have any real sense of time.

I blinked, and my childhood, adolescence, and youth were gone, and here I am, so close to turning 40. I look at my son, who was in my arms not so long ago and is now almost an adult, and the first gray hairs don't bother me, but I'm beginning to welcome them. Does everyone go through this kind of reflection on age, on time running out, or is this torment just an illusion I create for myself?

I can't say this latest breakup has been easy. I miss the life I used to have, even though it wasn't the best thing that had ever happened to me. I don't even know if I truly deserve the happiness that this feeling of life's unfairness toward me seems to deny me. I don't think I deserve anything. Life is becoming increasingly lonely, and I don't know how to deal with it very well.

Despite everything, lately, I've been distancing myself from people I once considered important to me. I have no patience for anything anymore, and if I'm going to feel lonely anyway, then so be it. Let loneliness completely take over me. I only pray that God keeps my son close to me. As for the rest, to hell with it all...

I've been meeting new women, and I admit that it feels good only during the first few dates. I get tired of them more and more quickly. Beautiful women, with gorgeous bodies and faces that can truly mesmerize, interesting and fun women who show their desire for me with an honesty that's almost surprising. It feels strange to me, realizing how much I've been desired and that I'm apparently still attractive. But only in the beginning. I get bored quickly, and then a craving for novelty takes hold. Sometimes, I dream that life could be the way it was three months ago, but waking up becomes a nightmare when I remember how I was, in a way, emotionally mistreated by the person I was with. I felt terrible, but these new experiences have given me a new perspective on myself, which is strange. Well, I hope that amid these casual encounters, I find someone to spend the rest of my life with. I couldn't bear going through another breakup. It's either that or living alone for the rest of my life.

Next Used Book Haul

I can't stop myself from buying used books. Even when I tell myself not to I seem to always find an excuse to look for a new used book store in the city or to just pop into a thrift store to check things out. Luckily the books are used and generally inexpensive, aside from a few rare books and popular outliers. Here's a look at the latest book haul that I've found and purchased. These ones I've gathered over the past month or maybe two.

The first is nothing special. It's Angel's and Demons by Dan Brown. Its one that I read forever ago and the last one that I needed to complete the series. It was a cheap one from the thrift store and now I have all of the Robert Langden books.

The next is one that a good friend of mine found me. It's book one of the Century Trilogy by Ken Follett. I read it over 10 years ago. I never went on to read the second and third books but I will try to do so at some point. I liked the first book so I may as well read the remainder.

I actually found the second book in the series shortly after, so that is the one that I will read.

That same friend found me another Dragonlance book to add to that part of my collection. I haven't read this book yet but I read one other Dragonlance book. I have quite a few of them to read now.

I found another one a few weeks later to.

A new series that I started trying to track down is the Inheritance Cycle quartet by Christopher Paolini. The author started writing his first book Eragon, when he was 15. He self published it with his parents and then went on a tour to different schools in the US to self promote it. Eventually it was recognized by another author and published by a major publishing firm. It went on to become a best seller. The authors story is impressive and I've seen it come up on review sites as a top, or very high rated fantasy series. I think that its meant for young adults but nonetheless I'll give it a read at some point. I really like the cover art of the hardcover books and they are relatively common to see at thrift book stores too. The book that I have is the third book in the quartet.

Recently I found a Michael Crichton book at a thrift store. I'm not sure why, but I feel compelled to buy the authors books when I see them, just because he has written so many iconic stories. To be honest, I'm not an overly big fan of Crichtons writing so it is a little odd for me to want to purchase them so much. I only buy them when they are cheap at least.

Next is my biggest find of this lot. Its more vintage, original art, Wheel of time hardcover books.

I found these on Facebook market place for a reasonable price and purchased 5 books. One was New Spring, the prequel to the original story. I also found the first book in the series, Eye of the world, which wasn't so reasonable a price. This book can be quite challenging to find though.

The Eye of the world copy I got is a 1st Edition, but its a 25th printing so its not super rare globally and not worth a lot of money or anything, but its not entirely easy to find either, like I said. I ended up paying $80 for this book which is a little expensive but it was the first time that I've come across it in over two years, so I felt okay forking up the money that day.

It just has such a vibe to it. I've already forgotten about the price hit, and have no buyers remorse. I'm just totally enjoying it on my shelf, so I know I made the right decicion.

Why do our loved ones hurt us?

These days a lot of things are happening and you will begin to question the sanity of humanity. Yes, the scripture did warn us that there will be signs when the end is near. However, if you settle down and think it through you will realize that these things have already been happening behind closed doors.

It is simply the internet that allows us a sneak peak into other people’s lives, experiences, struggles and joys. So this information age is making it possible to access things that would have seemed far-fetched if you did not hear it directly from the horse's mouth.

Seeing that people are no longer dying in silence, getting all hypertensive and depressed is somehow reassuring that maybe mental health cases can be reduced. But the level of heartache that other people put their fellow humans through is beyond disheartening.

It would be great if it is your enemy that is inflicting these hurts upon you because this would be justifiable. It is sad that the pains are inflicted by people who you love and care deeply about.

These folks simply cannot accrue you the same care and affection you give them but instead of moving along to the person they really want to show love and care to, they stay back and hurt you deeply.

Your only offense here being that you decided to hold them in high esteem and care about them. They use these feelings, and hurt you so bad.

If the people we love hurt us this bad, who are we supposed to turn to? Who will we bear our hearts out to? Is this why religion came to be? So we can move closer to God because he sees all and will listen to our plights?

Is this why we needed the reassurance that there is one person who will love unconditionally and won’t do anything to hurt us? Is this why we have that scripture that reassures us that his plans and thoughts towards us are that of good and not evil?

It could be because these days, when you read the things people go through in the hands of their loved ones, you will start to wonder how they coped for so long. We can truly bet that a lot of people turned to religion to soothe their broken hearts and it felt like their only hope after everything they have been through.

A loss today may become an advantage tomorrow

If you have ever placed a bet on something and you lost then you will know the hurt and disappointment that comes from losing a bet. It may not only be the fact that you were wrong but also the portion of money you lost that could have been used for something different if you did not place that bet.

Other people who are purely against gambling will tell you that your life will spoil if you keep betting on any thing of your choice. It could be soccer, horse, car races, snooker, basketball, tennis, crickets, just about anything.

If you get your first win and become addicted, your friends will definitely gather around and advise you to stop while you are further ahead and haven’t put up your house yet.

Yes, it happens. People put up their homes when placing bets. They know they could be homeless by the end of the match but they are willing to see the bet through. Others put their hard earned money, and a lot empty their savings.

Their conviction is often so strong that they are willing to dump everything they have on a bet that seems to be a life changing one.

However, there is always something they cannot control. The outcome of the matches, maybe a fixed match at some point by the sports officials to fill their own bags, a player getting pulled out due to injury(I hear people bet on this too), and if it is football, the chances of betting a team will score three (3) goals and above, and only for all 22 players not scoring even one goal till the final whistle is blown.

These things are not far-fetched, they happen. So people bet on the possibility of any of these happening or not. And those who are so sure and win get to go home with a life changing money or wrongly predicted get dragged down to the bottom feeder, depending on how much was staked.

We are not here to discuss these possibilities, because everyone knows it happens. We are here to point out how these experiences if you have been in the field for a while, losing, winning, losing again, winning, back and forth shapes you.

There are certain things that start being clear to you. There will be invincible lines you start seeing that while you were trying to make money in the past, you probably wasn’t paying attention.

Those blurred lines if you look closely start shaping how you place bets.

Instead of always trying to win everyday, you start learning to wait, watch, listen, observe and at the right time, you pounce.

Initially, you were in a reacting mode. You just wanted to place a bet in case it wins, leaving everything to chance.

But now, you are no longer doing that.

You are now working out a strategy while you wait. And when you are able to wait long enough for that event to turn in your favor, those losses you used to have become an advantage at the right time and there goes your jackpot!

Now this does not apply to gambling alone, it plays out in life as well. There will be certain decisions you make everyday hoping you will make those imaginary numbers and start balling, showing people that you got it and you keep losing. Day in, day out.

But once you start slowing down, observing, keeping your ears down, those bits and pieces of the puzzle will fall in your laps, and you will decide to either act on it or leave it. The decision at this point is always up to you. The advantage will be yours to use, squeeze until there is no lemon left.
